I had seen in the past images of Google head office, but never as many as of the Zuerich one. The contrast with the average cubicle environment (last image) makes this workplace even more remarkable (I’m not so sure about the library room, with wallpaper replacing book shelves – so American!).
One thing though is: there’s no free lunch – working for Google apparently means working hard, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a highly competitive environment as well. I’m therefore not sure whether all the fun really compensates for the possible physical and emotional stress.
Another thing that stumps me is: being day-in-day-out in such creativity enhancing environment, why is it that Google’s visual design is so incredibly boring? I know the average hacker’s ideal poetry is code, but don’t they have any graphic web designers? What is the reason that a highly visually stimulating work environment produces absolute ennui in GUI design???
Which is your reality?
