“I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the lower animals (so-called), and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. For it obliges me to renounce my allegiance to the Darwinian theory of the Ascent of Man from the Lower Animals; since it now seems plain to me that the theory ought to be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new and truer one to be named the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals.
This sentiment is echoed by the “Rant – We are the curse on the world“, a powerful and stirring post on a blog by nerd10101. I myself have thought many times that we seem to be the silent killer virus created to choke to death most life on earth, but there is also Mr Darwin. If he’s right with his evolution theory (and right now I have no reason to doubt it), we are a product of the planet’s evolution. The next question is: does evolution have an inherent logic in terms of development and therefore is there a purpose for our species? Or does everything just happen at random and we’re just one of nature’s experiments gone wrong?
The first case gives some hope that the human species might be just going through some crazed adolescent phase – on its way to maybe some more mature pastures of wisdom. The second thought though is not necessarily less comforting: if the universe itself is driven by creation through destruction, a theory straight from astrophysics, the planet too has ways of self-correcting mistakes and renewing itself – which means we might go the way of the dinosaurs. There is a case for pitying the fact though that we contributed to so much compost.
